Course objectives
The course helps students to plan their postdoctoral career. It focuses on submitting a postdoctoral grant application, the available funding schemes and experience with them, the publication of the dissertation or its parts, the importance of networking outside Masaryk University (both in the Czech Republic and abroad), and self-presentation in an academic job interview.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students are able to:
  • evaluate the possibilities of a postdoctoral career;
  • assess the strengths and weaknesses of their academic profile;
  • prepare a postdoctoral grant application;
  • think strategically about the publication of their dissertation (or parts thereof);
  • establish and maintain a network of academic contacts;
  • shine in an academic job interview.

    Teaching methods
    Seminars; written materials (CV update); short presentation of one's research and its relevance for non-specialists (Spiel); mock job interview (the teacher, students on the course and optionally other academics, e.g. the supervisor, sit on the mock committee).
    Assessment methods
    Evaluation of the student's CV (30%). Mock job interview (70%).
