Course objectives
During this course, the students will meet both Basque customs and traditions as well as the current situation in the linguistic and cultural background.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. History and culture of Basque 2. Prehistory and mythology. Origins of the Basque. 3. Fishmongers and whalers. Conquistadors and emigrants. 4. International linguists in Basque. Humbolt, Bonaparte, Van Eys 5. Sociability. Cuadrilla, sukaldea,jaiak. 6. Basque language and culture-related Czech figures.Tauer, Slaby. 7. The origins of Ikastola. Basque in Education. 8. Basque Nationalism and its cultural legacy. 9. Basque music. Folklore, Ez dok Amairu, songbooks, Basque Radical Rock.

Teaching methods
The lectures will make an introduction to analyze the context of different cultural expressions and different supports (audio, video, image, text) will be used in class. Therefore, participation and positive attitude are essential in this subject.
Assessment methods
Written test and presentation (%70). Participation (%30): in addition to active participation and homework, to aim these points is essential to attend classes.
