Realistický román 19. století jako oblast konstituování velkého příběhu a román 20. století charakteristický ztrátou epičnosti a postupnou destrukcí vyprávění - to jsou dva body, ke kterým se upíná výklad snažící se osvětlit specifickou vývojovou variabilitu španělské narativní prózy 19. a 20. století od kostumbristické črty (Lara, Mesonero Romanos) a kostumbristického románu (Fernán Caballero) k románu realistickému (Alarcón, Valera, Pereda), galdosovské epopeji a románu naturalistickému (Pardo Bazán, Clarín).
