Course objectives
The course Slovak Encounters and Confrontations presents a selection of topics from Slovak literature, culture, but also social development in the context of Czech-Slovak relations on an area basis. The lecture is both an interpretation and a set of case studies on individual, attractive issues of Slovak literary development and the more recent social and cultural situation; it will also provide an overview of the development of Slovak literature and its current state, all within a broader social context. The purpose of the culture is not only factual, but above all to learn about the key phenomena of Slovak literature, Czech-Slovak relations in the form of reciprocity and non-reciprocity/resistance, and the complexities and ambiguities as the development presented them in the course of the 19th-21st centuries. The seminar is oriented towards reading and independent study, self-reporting and discussion. The student is required to prepare an independent written seminar paper on a topic of his/her own choice within the scope of the course's problem range of at least 10 standard pages with the features of a professional thesis (internal structure, notes, list of references used).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- identify and summarize key features and phenomena of Slovak literary, cultural and political development;
- have a general knowledge, also from their own reading, of the works of important Slovak writers;
- characterise the form of Czech-Slovak literary and cultural relations and explain their connection with the socio-political changes in Slovakia. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
