Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the methodology of critical discursive analysis, to introduce them to its basic principles, concepts, tools and to help them better understand the structure, content and intentions of media texts.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- cover basic theoretical concepts and theories of CDA,
- understand the role of discourse in the context of social behavior,
- master the basic tools for analyzing the structure and content of media texts,
- apply theoretical knowledge of CDA in the analysis of journalistic texts.

  • 1. CDA research background
  • 2. Key concepts of CDA (text and discourse, criticism, ideology, power)
  • 3. Philosophical bases of CDA (M. Foucault, J. Habermans)
  • 4. Main CDA streams (van Dijk, R. Wodak, N. Fairclough)
  • 5. CDA methods (dispositional analysis, socio-cognitive approach, discursive-historical approach, dialectical approach)
  • 6. Methodological apparatus for revealing the persuasive line of the text
  • 7. Multimodal discourse analysis
