Course objectives
The course is focused on Art Nouveau architecture and its development. The lectures present art nouveau architecture from its roots through expansion to its stylistic transformations, which include both floral, geometric and folklore inspirations. The thematic circuits will be demonstrated during an excursion around Brno's city center, during which the topic discussed will be demonstrated on selected architectural examples.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- analyze Art Nouveau as a complex socio-cultural phenomenon of the turn of the 19th and 20th century;
- to orientate in art nouveau architecture and detect its transformations, including partial stylistic currents;
- understand the key pieces of art nouveau architecture and integrate them into a wider architectural context.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. Information about the course and its completion. A general outline of the socio-cultural milieu of the turn of the 19th and 20th century and its relationship to architecture.
  • 2. Architectural discourse of the second half of the 19th century. Background of architectural academicism and historicism, urban changes (sanitation, transport, infrastructure), building typology. 3. Prerequisites of art nouveau and its roots (movement for the restoration of arts and crafts, Japonism, socio-cultural changes of the 19th century).
  • 4. Art Nouveau as an architectural phenomenon. Examples of Art Nouveau periodisation. Phenomenology of art nouveau morphology and its approximation on early art nouveau realizations (Belgium, Paris, Vienna).
  • 5. Myth, fairy tale and ideal of homeland. Historically and locally determined architecture of art nouveau folklorism (Jurkovič, Lechner, Witkiewicz).
  • 6. Geometric creative tendencies, brought closer to examples of the work of Viennese protagonists (Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann, etc.).
  • 7. The role of visual arts in Art Nouveau architecture.
  • 8. Art Nouveau in the Czech lands.
  • 9. Art Nouveau in Brno. Early examples of reception of art nouveau morphology, influence of Otto Wagner's students, development, personalities.
  • 10. Art Nouveau, and what next? Possibilities of architecture at the end of Art Nouveau (revival of historicism, early examples of modernism, the so-called 1910 style, etc.).
  • 11. Excursion around the center of Brno. Zooming in on the topic discussed on selected architectural examples.
  • 12. Summary.
