Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce beginning students of interactive media theory to the context of new media art, a brief overview of its history, theoretical background and current state. It will also introduce them to the important personalities (artists, theorists) of new media art and, through current topics of digital art and its practical aspects (exhibitions, festivals, institutions), provide students with an introductory insight into the subject on the domestic and international scene. The course will also include a brief introduction to professional and academic writing, consisting of information on locating relevant sources, citation and basic professional genres. The course will bridge the theory and practice of discourse in the art of interactive media and, in addition to lectures, aims to develop in students (through collaborative discussion) the capacity for critical thinking and the ability to reflect on the current state of the field.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be:
a) capable of recognizing relevant resources suited to the art of interactive media research;
b) familiarized with some of the key themes, theoreticians and artists in the field of Theory of Interactive Media;
c) oriented in the local contemporary art within the field of study;
d) familiarized with key institutions and festivals in new media theory and practice in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Syllabus
  • 1) Course content, orientation in IS, communication and teaching methods during the semester (syllabus, study materials, hand-ins), requirements for completion.
  • Relevant sources, information retrieval, citation standard, bibliography, list of sources.
  • 2) New Media Art: history, introduction, basic overview of genres, life and work of selected artists from the national and international scene.
  • 3) Theory and philosophy of new media (key theses). New media art in practice - contemporary themes, exhibitions, festivals, schools
  • 4) Discussion of emerging themes for proseminar work, consultation.

Teaching methods
a) lectures about relevant resources suited to research the art of interactive media
b) lectures and discussions that should lead to students´s better navigation through the vast field of the theory and practice in interactive media art
c) discussions on selected topics from the field of study and debates on the current happening in contemporary new media theory and practice (personalities, institutions)

Assessment methods
To obtain the credits, the students are asked for:
a) active participation during the seminars
b) by November 14th pass the review of selected research topic into the subject repository (scope of 2 - 3 pages, incl. references)
c) by December 22th pass on a proposal theme for your theoretical work (including a draft list of resources) into the subject repository
d) meeting attendance conditions (75% presence in lectures)
