Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of empirical research with an emphasis on social science research methods, which can be useful when carrying out own research in the field of interactive media, for example for the needs of developing a diploma thesis.
The course has an introductory and overview character, it will discuss key methodological concepts and research methods of social sciences, which students may encounter when creating a diploma thesis in the field of Theory of Interactive Media. The course introduces students to the basics of scientific knowledge and empirical research with an emphasis on the possibility of using selected social science research methods when investigating interactive media. Its first part is dedicated to the basics of scientific knowledge and key aspects of empirical research – the basic features of scientific knowledge, the logic of empirical research, the issue of professional sources, research design, as well as the specifics of qualitative and quantitative research. The second part of the course offers an overview of selected social science research methods that can be used in research in the field of interactive media such as questioning (questionnaire surveys and interviews), observation and ethnographic methods, qualitative and quantitative analysis of communication messages.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- list and define the main features and concepts of scientific knowledge in the context of social sciences and humanities
- list the basic aspects of research design and illustrate them on your own research project
- search for relevant professional sources related to the investigated research problem
- describe the research methods that were discussed in the course and illustrate their applicability within the field of study
- choose a suitable research file or case for your own research
- choose an appropriate method of data collection and analysis for the needs of one's own research and reflect on its limits
