Course objectives

An overview of contemporary developments and trends in spoken French, introduction to sociolinguistics and social dialectology – slang, argot -- with emphasis placed on generationally and socially conditioned sociolects.

• Sociolinguistic variation Spoken/written Standard/substandard French Functions of argot Common argot/argot of youngsters Social disruption and linguistics of the suburbs Hip hop, literature and cinema of the suburbs Borrowings/multilinguism

Seminar attendance is mandatory. Colloquium – two group seminar papers - a) translation and sociolectal analysis of selected rap lyrics, b) subtitling a selected film segment.
