Course objectives
A brief survey of the dialects of Italy in synchronic and diachronic levels.
Syllabus
  • Differentiation of vulgar Latin in the Apennine peninsula; Italic, Etruscan, Celtic and other substrata and their influence; historical and political conditions fostering linguistic diversity; classification of existing dialects; phonetic, morphological and lexical characteristics of major dialects.
