Důraz je kladen na některá vrcholná období a nejvýznamnější zjevy: Německá literatura středověká, výmarská klasika (Goethe), romantismus, literatura 20. století (Brecht, Böll) a současná. Ze severských literatur především Ibsen, Strindberg, Hamsun, Andersen, Kierkegaard.
