Course objectives
UzNJ_591 Johanes von Saaz: "Der Ackermann aus Bohemen" – The Ploughman from Bohemia The main objectives of the seminar are: - Acquiring of knowledge and overview of the various views of the late medieval rhetoric that were topical in Central Europe.
- Acquiring of an overview of the literary traditions of the German and Czech literature around the year 1400 in Bohemia.
- Analysis of the literary work "Oráč z Čech" (The Ploughman of Bohemia).
- Possible models: letters of consolation and treatises, e.g. Petrarchan treatise "De remediae utriusque fortunae".
- The translation of "Oráč z Čech" (The Ploughman of Bohemia) by Eisner and by Povejšil.
- The relationship between "Oráč z Čech" (The Ploughman of Bohemia) and its old Bohemian counterpart "Tkadleček" (Little Weaver), résumé of the contemporary state of the research – outline of the research issues.

  • 1.Rhetorikbegriff, -definition 2.Mittelalterliche Rhetorikauffassungen 3.Hauptverfahren: Amplifikatio, Abreviatio, weitere syntaktische und stilistische Figuren. Metapher und ihre Typologie im mittelalterlichen literarischen Kontext. 4. Ausgewählte mittelalterliche Literaturwerke der deutschen und tschechischen Provenienz 5. Lektüre des "Ackermann aus Böhmen" - Analyse ausgewählter Kapitel 6. Lektüre des Trostbriefs von Francesco Petrarca 7. Lektüre ausgewählter kapitel aus dem alttschechischen "Tkadlec" 8. Auswertung der Ergebnisse 9. Die neutschechischen Übersetzungen des "Ackermanns aus Böhmen" (Pavel Eisner, Jaromir Povejsil). 10. Anweisungen zur Seminararbeit.

The seminar is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge. It also uses collective work, in-class discussions and individual work of students.
