Course objectives
The main objectives of this seminar are: understanding the principles of the courtly culture and the way of communication on the climax of the Middle-Ages as a new joint communication code. Understanding the poetics of "minnesang" that is binding for the Czech courtly poetry as well. Familiarize with the phases of German minnesang. Explanation of the following points: "Das Hohe Minnelied", composition. Secondary types of songs: "Kreuzzugslied, Tagelied." The influence of Czech courtly poetry by the "minnesang" of the German speaking countries.
The students should be able to make comments in written form to the above mentioned topics and points.
Syllabus
  • Syllabus: 1. Courtly culture and communication as a literary phenomenon.
  • 2. German "minnesang" and its phases.
  • 3. "Minnesang" of the German speaking countries – basics of the poetics of the "minnesang".
  • 4. Selected authors and their characteristic songs. Analyses based on the poetics and motivation of the "minnesang".
  • 5. Old Bohemian love poetry – main types of songs, specific features and tendencies of the poetics and motives in comparison with the classical "minnesang".
  • 6. Analyses of selected Old Bohemian courtly songs.
  • 7. Evaluation of results.
