Course objectives
This course gives a basic orientation a basic orientation in historical, theoretical and practical problems of music notation as the main communication means in music. It deals also with the problems of identification of various kinds of notation and with the ways of their transcription in present music notation.
Syllabus
  • The subject of this course is made up by following five thematic spheres: 1) Basic terms and categories; 2) Writing and music - Letter notation systems; 3) Latin neums; 4) Nota choralis; 5) Mensural systems - Modal notation. Detailed syllabus and individual thematiac units and a list of corresponding literature is in IS MU (pleas see the Study materials of the subject VHK_11a).

Teaching methods
Class (1,5 hours per month); within the class a combination of teacher-led activities and student-centered/ group learning activities will be employed.
Assessment methods
The course is ended by a credential interview, succes of which is based on: a) Reliable knowledge of problems of historical development of notation within the historical stages given by the syllabus and lectures; b) Reliable knowledge of principeles of the studied notation systems and their transcription. c) Reliable knowledge of basic literature on the subject.
