First part of basic course on the history of music (VH_801a)and completed basic course of Latin I+II (CJV_09+CJV_10).

Course objectives
This course gives a basic orientation in historical, theoretical and practical problems of music notation as the main communication means in music to the end of 16th century. It deals also with the problems of identification of various kinds of notation and with the ways of their transcription in present music notation.
Syllabus
  • The subject is made up by following thematic spheres: 1) Basic terms and categories. 2) Writing and music - letter notation systems. 3) Latin neums. 4) Nota choralis. 5) Mensural systems I - modal notation. 6) Mensural systems II - French notation 7) Mensural systems III - White mensural notation. Teaching methods
Class (1,5 hours per week); within the calss a combination of teacher - led activities and student - centered/group learning activities will be employed.
Assessment methods
The course is ended by an written and oral examen, succes of which is based on: 1) Reliable knowledge of problems of historical development of notation within the historical stages given byl the syllabus and lectures. 2) Reliable knowledge of principles of the studied notation systems and their transcription. 3) Reliable knowledge of basic literature on the subject. 4) Satisfactory fulfilment of the given seminar task. 5) Successful result of the exam test (transcription of ten bars of the drawn music example).
