Course objectives

At the end of the course students should be able to:
explain the basic notions and theoretical concepts of the sociology of music;
identify the elementary methodological positions of the important representatives of the sociology of music;
locate the main theoretical concepts in the development of the social sciences and musicology;
apply the theoretical concepts in the analysis of the particular cases in the history of music and contemporary musical culture.

• Sociology of music and ethnomusicology
• Troubadors and the sociology of minnesang
• Social position of musicians in the Middle Ages and Renaissance
• Opera as an institutions
• Concert as an institution
• Social role of the composer
• Music industry
• Mass culture and musical culture
• Introduction to the methods of the empirical research in the sociology of music
