Course objectives
The lecture is directed upon the explication of both theoretical and practical problems connected with the development of polyphonic mass musical composition as a central formation of music activity of middle-ages and renaissance. A special attention is paid to the problems of individual stages of progress of the technique of the cantus firmus and to the characteristics of main tendencies of development and diversification of compositional techniques of polyphony between 900 and 1300. At the end of the course students will dispose of the basic sum of knowledge and sills necessary for a reliable orientation in both the theoretical and practical problems of the subject as it is formulated in the included syllabus.
Syllabus
  • The subject is made up by following seven thematic spheres: 1) Mass as textual and ritual system. 2) Mass as a musical system. 3) Formation of the principle of cantus firmus and origins of the polyphonic setting of the mass text. 4) Origins of the musically autonomous approach to the mass text - conflict between the cult (ritual) and cultural (artistic) principles. 5) Formation of the principle of cycle. 6) From the proportional to the linear - process of rationalization of compositional techniques. 7) Development of mass in the 16th century - beginnings of the conflict between the polyphonic and homophonic principles.
