Course objectives
Presentation of Vietnamese language from comparative point of view. At the end of this course a student is able to understand the historical development of Vietnamese language, knows mutual influences with other languages, is able to make distinctions between genetical, typological and areal relations and knows the most important foreign loanwords in Vietnamese.
Syllabus
  • 1. Vietnamese, its classification and dialects, 2.-3. geneticaly related vs. contact languages, 4. outer history of language contacts, 5. important typological features of Vietnamese, 6. phonetic differences of Vietnamese and contact languages with implicatios for loanwords, 7. syntactical differences, 8.-9. examples of loanwords from Chinese, 10. examples of loanwords from French, 11. loanwords from English, 12. loanwords from other languages and Vietnamese borrowings into other contact languages.
