Course objectives
The purpose of this course is introduce to knowledge organization in the narrow sense: knowledge organizing systems (KOS) such as bibliographical records, classification systems (e.g., DDC, LCC and UDC), thesauri, semantic networks and knowledge organizing processes such as classification, document description, "descriptive cataloging", indexing and subject analysis. The course informs students about trends and new issues in knowledge organization. At the end of this course, students should be able to recognize and describe different types of KOS (especially distinction between traditional and new systems), to understand KOS as tools for organization of information in digital environment, to explain different approaches and issues in knowledge organization and the theory behind tools and systems providing access to documents.
