English - reading skill at level of understanding computer manual.
Students of distant learning have to be able to connect to address http://knihomol.phil.muni.cz/cgi-bin/sql.exe over Internet or have to own a computer with MySQL database installed.

Course objectives
At the end of the course students will:
have basic knowledge of a SQL database language (Structured Query Language);
be able to use SQL to work with relational database MySQL at beginner level;
Syllabus
  • Introduction
  • relational databases principles, RDBMS, client - server architecture, tables, indexes, SQL language principles.
  • 1st part - basic commands and structures
  • show databases, show tables, describe; select from one table, columns selection, alias, rows selection, distinct, sorting, rows grouping, basic aggregation functions (count, sum, min, max, avg).
  • 2nd part - DDL, DML, functions
  • create/alter/drop/truncate table, data types, create like, create select; insert, update, delete, insert select; operators and functions; searching (like, match against)
  • 3rd part - working with multiple tables
  • key, foreign key, unique, auto_increment column; joining tables - join (cross, inner, left outer, right outer), joining using where; nested select, temporary table; indexes - create/drop/show index, explain.

Teaching methods
Attendance of exercises is facultative, it is possible to pass the course by distant learning.
Computer exercises using web based environment for sample database interaction will be aimed at solution of practical tasks by creating SQL queries.
Assessment methods
All students have to go through a final practical test on a computer. Lenght of test is 90 minutes, students will be allowed to use their own notes and any SQL manual. Any communication among students will be strongly prohibited.
Minimum of 80% of points will be required for receiving credit.
