Course objectives
After finishing the course students:
- understand the specifics of memoir literature;
- are able to recognize general information from lectures in selected texts;
- are familiar with potential interpretative approaches;
- verify acquired skills in individual interpretations of chosen texts;
- deepen their interpretative skills.
Main objectives of the subject:
definition of particularity of Memoire literature, acquirement of its specific features, position in genre system; brief outline of Memoire Literature development (basic outstanding and the most important writtings since the 16th century), transformation of paradigm and ideology, the application of information for selected writtings interpretation; new trends in Memoire literature; specific features of Memoire Literature and its position among other literary genres (Documentary literature, Journalistic literature, Fiction). Emphasis lies upon transformations of Czech Memoire literature of the 20th century and the present day. Students are introduced to portrayal of outstanding memoirs of the last stage of development and to analysis of memoire texts.
Syllabus
  • The course includes lectures and seminars, both diffusible and complementary
  • Lecture: Literature and its evaluation; kinds of literature applications for studies and professional practical work,theoretical base; portrayal and definition of Memoire literature genre and its position among other literary genres; relations to Documentary literature, Journalism and Fiction; classification of Memoire literature; development of Memoire literature; memoire literature the 20th - the 21st century, its portrayal and frequency, new kinds of Memoire literature; trashy versus classical (traditional) types of memoirs, kinds of their evaluation; theoretical principles for analysis, interpretation and comparison of current memoire texts; documentation; objectivity and subjectivity; controversial types of memoirs; memoirs as a dialogue; memoirs as a social order, memoirs worked out during participation of an associate as a second subject; application of memoirs in expert writting
  • Seminar:
  • Analysis of particular memoirs of the 20th and the 21st century; confrontation among different types of memoirs (commercial and classical memoirs; different versions of the same memoirs; type of poetic diary) – memoirs under the magnifying glass.
  • Short essay will be prepared for discussion about given text. Students are expected to choose memoire texts for analysis out of submitted offer at the beginning of the course, exact chronology of essays will be prescribed. Emphasis lies upon self-centered approach and the following discussion. Basic criteria needed for the analysis of memoire texts will be discussed in the first seminary.

Teaching methods
The lecture is based on methods of interpretation, analysis and application. In seminary excercise each student elaborates an essay and defends it in discussion.
