Course objectives
The aim of the course is individualized processing of own quantitative or qualitative research. Students should enter the course with a defined research topic (e.g. in the project of the diploma thesis), which will be processed up to the level of processing of the research data during the semester. Different approaches to the processing of the research topic and the purpose of its processing will be presented first. This is followed by data collection, data processing and research reports, where quantitative and qualitative aproaches are alternated. Meetings consist of a short lecture (max. 30 min.) following presentations of individual students, presenting the currently solved problems. Students should inspire each other, learn from the problems of others on the basis of their practical work.
Syllabus
  • 1. Content of the subject and the conditions for completion. Basic concepts of research methodology. Purpose of the research. 2. Qualitative and quantitative methods. Basic types of research (needs analysis, action and evaluation research...). Advantages and disadvantages of research designs (questionnaire, content analysis, test, observation, interview, focus group...). 3. Importance and processing of literature review. 4. Phases of quantitative research. Definition of research questions and hypotheses, operationalization of variables, research sample. 5. Phases of qualitative research. Definition of research questions, research sample and entry into the field, ethics of research. 6. Creating a quantitative research tool: questionnaire, test, observation. Distribution of the research tool. 7. Creation of a qualitative research tool: interview scenario, observation. Collection of qualitative data. 8. Cleaning quantitative data. 9. Coding of qualitative data. 10. Processing of first and second grades, statistical hypothesis tests. 11. Qualitative research: Research project / application. Research report. 12. Quantitative research: Research project / application. Research report.
Teaching methods
Lecture, individual work, presentation of continuous outputs, active discussion
Assessment methods
To complete the subject, continuous work on own research and active participation in discussion within the meetings devoted to the given type of research (quantitative or qualitative) is necessary. During the semester students write a report on their own research. Every week a record is needed, with the possibility of explaining why the student did not work on the research in that week. At meetings, they present the outputs of their work for the given week and the problems currently being solved. An active participation in the discussions is expected, so the attendance is at least 6 meetings. The completion of the subject is the above-mentioned written report on the progress of the research, when the student has to go to at least the stage when the research results are already processed (it is not necessary to have a completed research report).
