The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the introductory information to the newer and contemporary history of Korea and Korean Peninsula, including cultural and economic development, important international relations, Korean war and the division of the Korean Peninsula. The course will describe development since the end of the 14th century CE till present.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the students will have an overview about basic historical settings and chronology of modern Korean history including basic knowledge of the Korean War and different development in South Korea and DPRK.
Syllabus
  • 1. Foundation of the Choson state, royal lineage, hierarchy of administrative structure and Yangban society
  • 2. Sources of political system and the development of Korean Neo-Confucianism
  • 3. Choson foreign relations and defense against the Japan and Manchu empire
  • 4. The rule of mighty families, internal changes and the development in culture and economy
  • 5. Negative development in the 19th, reforms and forms of dissent among the population
  • 6. Northeast Asia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the expansion of Japan and occupation of Korea
  • 7. The Japanese colonial policy and the forms of Korean nationalism
  • 8. The end of Japanese colonial rule in Korea and the growth of pressures in international politics
  • 9. Political division of the Korean Peninsula and Korean War
  • 10. Postwar development in both parts of the Korean Peninsula and authoritarian systems
  • 11. Contemporary development in the Republic of Korea, modernization and problems of economic growth
  • 12. Contemporary development in North Korea
