Course objectives

The course goal is to explain the fundamental concepts, principles and methods of two disciplines dealing the sound shape of language - phonetics and phonology. Attention will be given to speech production, the classification of speech sounds and other phonic means (stress, intonation) both from the perspective of their formation and according to their acoustic properties. The course General phonetics and phonology for Vietnamese studies is a fundamental theoretical profile core course of the study programme Vietnamese Studies. Content of this course and acquired knowledge will be also a part of the Final State Examination.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students will be able
- to understand and explain general problems of phonetics and phonology
- to apply scientific terminology and methods of phonetic research and to use this knowledge in their further studies
- to explain the process of speech production
- to characterize speech sounds according to their properties - to apply the international phonetic transcription to concrete languages, in particular on Czech
- to explain and apply the fundamental phonological concepts

• 7) Prosodic means from articulatory and acoustic point of view
• 8) Prosodic organization of speech
• 9) Intersegmental articulatory co-ordination – overview
• 10) Phonology and its basic concepts

Written exam consisting of four questions focusing on the fundamental phonetic and phonological concepts and the phonetic classification of speech sounds; due to the limited time of the lectures, a considerable part of the course is self-study; it is not compulsory to attend the lectures.
