Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce law students into the system of Latin morphology and the rudiments of syntax so that they could read simple Latin texts and look up any Latin legal term.
Syllabus
  • 1. Revision of the system of latin noun and adjective declination. Demonstrative pronouns. Indefinite pronoun formation. Translation. 2. Comparison of the system “present“in individual conjugations – revision. Interrogative and relative pronouns. Legal phrases. 3. Main latin sources of law. Future tense I. Conversion of parts of speech II. 4. Cardinal and ordinal numerals. Greek and latin numerals and expressions of amount in internacionalism. Translation of a text. 5. Adverb formation and gradation – regular. Irregular verbs velle, nolle. 6. Adjective and adverbs gradation. Historical quotations. 7. Translation of a text. Irregular verbs ferre, ire. 8. “Participium prezens“ active in a construction of “ablative absolute“. 9. Indicatives and conjuncts sequence in latin. Translation. 10. Conjuncts of “imperfectum“ and “prezens“ of irregular verbs. Present conjuncts in subordinate sentences. Legal phrases III. 11. Case syntax – summary. Frequency in legal and general statements. 12. Forms of perfect stem. Text analysis and translation.

Requirements: Active participation in class discussion, final written credit test - the translation of a coherent Latin text using the dictionnary (Students have to score more than 60%) and oral exam
