Course objectives
This class is an introduction to American jury trials. The class will be focused on a felony criminal case.
Syllabus
  • Students will be asked to develop a defense for the accused against charges of felonious assault and attempted murder. During the classes they will be introduced to actual criminal case which they will work on, exploring the ways of processing a case, using direct examination and cross examination.
Literature
  • Study materials (a police report) will be presented before and during the classes.
Teaching methods
Students shall submit written voire dire questions, opening statements and outlines of direct and cross examinations. Each student shall have the chance to perform one or more of these parts of a jury trial in class. Class discussion, case study.
Assessment methods
All students shall present a closing argument in class as a final exam. Grading will be based on classroom performance and quality of written assignments according to the chosen percentage. There will be a possibility for and individual agreement (meeting) on Monday 24 October for students who were not successfull with the first take of the exam.
