Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to deepen practical skills and orientation in use of various legal information systems.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, student is expected to be able to: - understand basic functions of legal information systems and describe any legal information systems using these functions;
- find legal information on the Internet;
- find acts other legal documents using ASPI, Codexis and Beck-online;
- evaluate credibility and validity of retrieved legal information and properly cite retrieved documents;
- conduct legal research of assigned legal issue;
- analyze the legal issue based on legal research.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
  • 1. Basic terms and concepts of legal information retrieval. Advanced search in ASPI.
  • 2. Advanced search in Beck-online. Advanced search in Codexis.
  • 3. Specialized modules (e.g. calculators). Online sources of legal information. EUR-Lex and HUDOC.
  • 4. Formulation of search strategy based on specifics of individual systems. Legal research.
  • 5. Annotation. Source management. Updating legal research outcomes.
  • 6. Preparation of legal analysis.
Literature
Teaching methods
Lectures supported by e-learning materials (via interactive syllabus). Online tests (ROPOTs) for self-study evaluation. ROPOT feedback. Seminar paper. Seminar paper feedback.
Assessment methods
To successfully complete this course students are required to fulfil all the requirements set in detail in the interactive syllabus (online tests and seminar paper).
