Course objectives
The objective of the course it to acquaint the students with the New Religious Movements (NRMs) phenomenon in the context of possible security risks. The goal of the course is not to carry out a complex analysis of the phenomenon; it should be rather perceived as a brief introduction of key concepts, terms, events and groups. Since the course applies a multidisciplinary approach (including social sciences, law and media environment) the students should, after going through the course, be able to carry out basic analysis of possible security risks stemming from the NRMs.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to NRMs issue 2. Sociological minimum: cult, sect, denomination, church 3. Psychological minimum: brainwashing, coercive techniques, thought reform criteria 4. Law minimum 5.
