- Aims of the course
This is a course primarily focused on practicing language skills in the context of the spread of information and communications technologies (ICT) and their effects on society and the global political and economic situation
1/ In terms of reading, the students will practice:
Reading academic papers
In each class, a scientific journal article or a scientific book chapter will be assigned as compulsory reading material to be discussed in the following class.
Reading news articles from sources such as The Guardian, Business Insider, Slate, TechCrunch and The New York Times Apart from comprehension questions, typical tasks to be performed with these texts will aim at enhancing the students’ ability to identify the structure of the English paragraph, means of coherence and topic sentences. Occasionally, there will be gap-fill exercises practicing students’ ability to use terms correctly.
Students will refer to media and academic sources in their reflective essays.
2/ In terms of listening, the students will practice:
Analyzing the content of TED talks, lectures and other types of video material
3/ In terms of speaking, the students will practice:
Taking part in debates and discussions in pairs, groups and in class
4/ In terms of writing, the students will practice:
Reflective essay writing on two topics discussed (word limit 500-600 words). The main focus will be on instructing the students to structure their texts and paragraphs in a clear, logical and reader-friendly way by using topic sentences and means of coherence such as sentence connectors. - Osnova

Regular attendance: two absences are allowed at maximum
Reading and taking part in the discussion of the assigned reading material for each class
Active participation in class activities
Submitting two reflective essays of 500-600 words which follow the prescribed format
