Course objectives
English for Psychology is a skills-based course for Master’s students of psychology and related disciplines. Students will practice listening (listening to lectures and note-taking, identifying the speaker’s point of view), speaking (delivering presentations, developing an argument, small talk), reading (how to understand academic articles, strategies helpful for efficient reading), writing (writing a presentation abstract and position paper, paraphrasing and summarizing). Moreover, great emphasis is paid to building students’ vocabulary, both from the academic word list in general and specific psychological vocabulary and terms.

  • 1. Introduction. What is psychology?
  • 2. Branches of psychology.
  • 3. Psychology in practice: phobias, mental disorders.
  • 4. Psychology and computers- using computers for doing research, virtual reality.
  • 5. Dreams and personality. Freud and Jung. Consciousness and personality.
  • 6. Memory, its models.
  • 7. Mental disorders: popular myths, stereotypes of mental illnesses.
  • 8. Personality.
  • 9. Modern addictions: Internet, eating disorders, cyberbullying.
  • 10. Parapsychology.

Teaching methods
class discussion, giving presentations, reading academic texts
Assessment methods
• Active class participation including giving a short lead to inform others about current topics in psychology.
• Delivering a presentation on topics related to the course syllabus.
• Writing an abstract to the presentation and a position paper on another topic related to the course syllabus.
