Course objectives
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with basic terminology related to the European Union, the European integration process, E.U. policies, institutions, political development, and history. Students will learn to engage this newfound vocabulary for use in both written and listening comprehension practice in their other courses of European studies, and in active conversation about their field of study.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students should acquire the ability to identify, comprehend, and contextualize basic terminology in relation to the European Union and its institutions.
Syllabus
  • This course will be taught entirely online this semester via the selected platform to be indicated by the instructor. This course will also use an interactive syllabus within the IS for access to all learning materials and homework vaults.

Assessment methods
This course is assessed according to portfolio assessment methodology, which is based on a continuous collection of partial outcomes based on the required level of CEFR. The recommended CEFR English language level for this course is B1+.

Specific division of grading:

  • Quizlet vocabulary assignment completion: 6 points
  • Vocabulary journal: 6 points
  • Participation in discussions during class (active participation in discussion fora and in online course meetings): 8 points
  • Short summary and response essay on a selected academic article: 10 points
  • Short summary and response essay on a selected speech/spoken source: 10 points
  • Group facilitation on current events within the EU: 30 points
  • Didactic exit test: 30 points

  • Total: 100 points


    The passing limit is 70/100 points. Each semester the instructor will provide students with a written syllabus for the course which contains individual assignment descriptions and more information.
