Course objectives
The course acquaints students with man's demands for energy and natural resources. It explains the mechanism of air, water and soil pollution and how organisms are affected. Attention is paid to pollution caused by noise, vibrations, heat, light and radiation. The course also involves a brief overview of environmental toxicology. The risks of energy industry, mining, industry, agriculture, forest management, transport and tourism will be analysed. Special attention will be paid to problems of waste management, especially the municipal one.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
understand the complexity of environmental problems;
improve their ability to analyse new problems and find solutions;
critically reflects and evaluate policy intruments of solving environmental problems.

Teaching methods
The course is based on lectures and individual work with the study recourses. Students are required to write two essays based on their readings.
Assessment methods
The course is finished by an examination. Students receive credits for two essays and the final written test. The literature for the subject will be placed in the section “Study materials” in IS. The exact conditions of the point evaluation for the test and essays will be published in the section “Study materials”. The topics for the presentations and the instructions will be published there as well.
