Cíle předmětu
Narratives of Globalization Exploding in the media are a myriad of ongoing reports about Globalizationhow it will save the world, how it will destroy the world, how well all benefit or all be damned! My goal in this writing course is to take these reports (or more accurately, to let the students find these reports and bring them to class) and then subject them to critical comment (or more accurately, to let the students subject them to critical comment). Sure, there will be a small amount of theory plugged into the course, maybe a Media Studies academic article here and a Development and Poverty article there, but I want the students to become competent and confident spokespeople by themselves on a subject which introduces a huge variety of topics theyll face here at university; subjects like: media representation, poverty and inequality, international economics, gender and race, American foreign policy, War, and resistance to oppression. Assessment will be via interactive seminars and debates, role-playing scriptwriting, essay writing (including rewriting newspaper reports that the students thought were innacurate, biased, or ill-informed) and speech-writing and speech-making.
