Course objectives
The aim of the course should be a better understanding of the nature conservation in the cultural landscape based on a site with a particularly valuable cultural and conservation component. At the end of this course the student should understand the basic motivations of the actors in conservation of monuments and conservation of nature. He/she should be better able to participate in the mediation of solving controversial cases in the conflict of nature conservation and heritage care. She/he should know the basic historical or, the legal framework affecting disputes in nature protection and monument care.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to better understand the mutual relations of conservation of monuments and nature protection; she/he will be able to better analyze the problems of nature conservation in the cultural landscape; student will better understand the institutional and ideological background of nature conservation.
Syllabus
  • The course is taught in the form of an excursion, the lectures (and discussions) are in the form of field-trip or in the room with a data projector. The the following topics will be discussed: 1) Introduction - mutual relations conservation of monuments and nature conservation, their common and different aspects in both the ideological and the executive, conceptual and institutional. A brief introduction to the basic conceptions of heritage care and nature conservation and its history. Institutional provision of heritage conservation and nature protection in the Czech Republic. 2) The Veltrusy region 3) Problems of heritage conservation and nature conservation relationships in a specific locality (in this case in a protected area of landscape park around the Veltrusy castle in Central Bohemia). The course will take place in the grounds of the Veltrusy (ferme-ornée) Landscape Park, the largest area managed by the NPÚ (National Heritage Institute) in the Czech Republic; accommodation in the area of the castle.
