Prerequisites
This course presumes good knowledge of European integration and especially its decision making system. Despite of core of the course consisted of lectures, students are activelly involved in terms of participation in interactive games and analysis. Except of theoretical reflection on the EU Council Presidency the course deals with its practical aspects connected to the Czech EU Council Presidency.

Course objectives
The course is based upon analysis of intergovernmental approach towards the European integration and its reflection in the European Union decision making system. At the end of the course, the student should be able to understand and explain importance of intergovernmental European institutions (Council of the EU, European Council, especially EU Council Presidency) and their contribution for process of European integration.

  • Lesson 3: History of the EU Council Presidency: the origins of European Integration
  • Lesson 4: History of the EU Council Presidency: 70´s and 80´s: first reform attempt
  • Lesson 5: Modern presidency: Maastricht Treaty, institutional changes in the 90´s
  • Lesson 6: Functions of the EU Council Presidency (presidency as a manager, presidency as a broker)
  • Lesson 7: Functions of the EU Council Presidency (presidency as a political leader and as a representative)
  • Lesson 8: Modern Presidency: how to prepare and manage an effective mandate
  • Lesson 9: Does the Presidency have impact? Influence of EU Council Presidency on European Union
  • Lesson 10: Does the Presidency have impact? Influence of EU Council Presidency on Member States

The course is carried out by combination of lectures and seminars. The course has its own web site http://mezivladni-unie.fss.muni.cz/
Assessment methods
The course ends with a written test. Final exam also reflects presentation group project (analysis of presidency mandate) and one essay.
