Course objectives
Seminar is focused on the topics of diverse current approaches to aesthetic appreciation of nature. We will concentrate mainly on philosophical environmental aesthetics, relation of environmental art and nature and natural scientific interpretation of aesthetic phenomena in nature. Student will approach the topics through different methods - by reading texts, participation in discussions and also through practical exercises, field trip and presentations. Seminar follows thematically HEN 440 Aesthetic Appreciation of Nature, but passing the subject is not compulsory for successful finalisation of this seminar, even if attending is highly recommended. In this seminar you will also become acquainted with texts needed for final essay for HEN 440.

  • 1. Introduction. Scientific (biological) interpretation of aesthetic phenomena in nature and origins of aesthetic appreciation. 2. Rediscovery of natural beauty in philosophical aesthetics in second half of the 20th century. 3. Basics of environmental aesthetics – Allen Carlson 4 Do we need scientific facts to appreciate nature? 5. The term "environment" and aesthetics 6. Scientific concepts of aesthetic appreciation of landscape 7. Evaluation of landscape character and landscape aesthetics in practice 8. Bio art - living organisms and biology (transgenic organisms, half living tissues etc.) in 20th and 21st century art - aesthetic and ethical questions 9. Current environmental art and aesthetics of nature 10. Engaged environmental aesthetic – between politics and aesthetic 11. Aesthetic challenges in the city (specificity of city environment) – field trip 12. Current art and nature - conclusion, exercise 13. Finalisation of seminar
