1. Students are expected to read the required readings for each seminar. The optional reading is only for those who have special interest in the topic. Please note that if there are two shorter required readings rather than one long, you are expected to read both of them. 2. Seminar participation. Students are expected to be frequently present in the classes and to actively participate in the discussions during the seminars. 3. Six short seminar papers, each of which should be 1 or 2 standard pages long. Students might be asked to communicate the main points of their papers to the class. Every student is expected to write six short papers for six different seminars. These papers should include a summary of the main points of the required readings, a critique of these readings, and possible questions for discussion. For more details see the Short Paper Guidelines posted on the course's website. The short papers should be submitted by email no later than 6 p.m. of the day before the seminar. Please paste the text into the body of the email. I will not open attachments of any kind. Papers submitted later than the specified deadline will not be accepted. 4. Final in-class written exam. The exam consists of 5 questions based on the required readings and the discussions in class. The threshold for a passing grade is 60%. EvaluationStudents who want to get a passing grade should fulfill all of the following: - submit on time six short seminar papers in compliance with the requirements for writing short papers. - pass the final exam - be frequently present in the classes - read the required readings - make a fair effort to participate in class discussions

Cíle předmětu
This course has two objectives. First, it acquaints students with three impotrant non-orthodox theoretical streams in International Relations: a/ poststructuralism, b/ postcolonialism, and c/ feminism. Second, it reviews in detail the debate between orthodox and non-orthodox theories of International Relations on the specific issues of democratization and development in less developed and democratizing countries. For this purpose, the course presents the mainstream theories' views on the global projects of democratization and development and then discusses different non-orthodox critiques of these mainstream views. The goal is to ensure that students not only learn the basic theoretical postulates of the non-orthodox theories, but also learn how these theories can be applied to specific problems in international relations. The organization of the course is as follows. The first three seminars are purely theoretical and present the basic theoretical postulates of the two most difficult approaches: poststructuralism and postcolonialism. The rest of the course concentrates on the specific problematic of democratization and development. In this part, the presentation of the mainstream approaches to development and democratization is always followed by a presentation of the different types of non-orthodox critique, namely poststructuralist, postcolonial, and feminist. The theoretical postulates of feminism will be explained in conjunction with its specific application in this part of the course. The course concludes with the concrete case study of the international mission in Bosnia when students will be invited to discuss the applicability of the non-orthodox approaches to this unusual case of externally imposed democratization.
