Course objectives
The overall goal of the course is to acquaint the students with the internal evolution of the United States of America as well as with the development of their position in the international system throughout the 19th century (with emphasis on the period of 1789-1865). Attention will be devoted to the United States in relation to the great powers and surrounding countries (in the case of expansion) on the background of the internal political and social development as well as to the process of the formation of the American state and national identity, which resulted in the division of the country and Civil war. Due to its importance the Civil war will be the emphasis of the seminars and students will be able to look into the internal and foreign policies of the Union and the Confederation, their mutual relations (political contacts as well as the war itself), and into other aspects of the military conflict which redefined the status of the USA and enabled their current position in the world.
