Course objectives
The goal of the course MVZ807 Introduction into the Security Policy is to acquaint students with the evolution of security policy in the second half of the 20th century, especially with the regard to the era of the Cold War and its end. The second part of this course is focused on the transformation of international security environment in the post-Cold War era and on the most serious security threats and issues of the Second nuclear age (e.g. proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and missile technologies, a role of nuclear weapons, rogue states). Attention will be also paid to main arms control negotiations and their results.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to familiarise students with the basic concepts and terminology of Strategic Studies; to understand the development of the international security environment in the Cold War; to acquire basic knowledge of the post-Cold War security architecture and the main security threats;

  • 9. Arms control and disarmament process in the 1980s
  • 10. Negotiations on strategic arms reduction after the Cold War

Assessment methods
The course is finished by a written exam. Overall assessment is composed of the final written examination (40 points), midterm written examination (10 points) and seminar paper (10 points).
Grading scale: A (57-60), B (53-56), C (48-52), D (44-47), E (40-43), F (below 40 points)
