Course objectives
The course deals with the dynamic period of the Napoleonic Wars. The main aim of the course is to understand the basic trends in the historical development in a pan-European context, its most important actors and the impact of the policies and achievements in the field of military of the powers of the time with regard to the division of spheres of influence and the beginnings of many social trends. On successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand developments during the Napoleonic Wars in an international context; outline the main milestones of political and military history; interpret the main historical events of the period; and use the knowledge gained to argue at an expert level.

  • 1) Introduction to the subject, description of appropriate literature. Introduction to the study of the Napoleonic Wars and their impact 2) The situation on the continent after the Great French Revolution - the causes of the Napoleonic Wars 3) The personality, youth and rise of Napoleon Bonaparte (not only) on the battlefield 4) The military at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars and its further development 5) The War of the Second Coalition and the Egyptian campaign of 1798-1799 - the end of the Revolutionary Wars 6) The War of the Third Coalition ending with the Battle of Austerlitz 1805 7) Defeat of Prussia and Russia in the War of the Fourth Coalition 1806-1807 8) Spanish Campaign 1808-1812 - the beginning of the end of French dominance 9) Austrian defeat during the War of the Fifth Coalition in 1809 10) Napoleon's Russian campaign - the disaster of 1812 11) The end of the Spanish campaign and the British-American War of 1812-1814 12) War of the Sixth Coalition - Battle of the Nations at Leipzig, fighting in France in 1814 13) Waterloo 1815, the end of the Napoleonic Wars and their international consequences
