Course objectives

The aim of the course is to clarify the essence of the foreign and security policy of the Russian Federation and also to understand Russian's worldview.

Learning outcomes

At the end of term students will understand essence of the domestic and foreign policy of the Russian federation. The aim of the lectures is to supplement the information based on the assigned literature and to lead a professional discussion and develop students' critical thinking.

• 1. Introduction 2. What we know about Russia? - geography, roots of geopolitics and political thinking 3. History of Russia 1: From "The gathering of the Russian lands" to the Russian Empire 4. History of Russia 2: The rise and fall of the Russian Empire 5. Russian political thinking, Mid-term test 6. Soviet Russia 7. Era of Gorbachev and Yeltsin 8. Putin's Russia 9. Reading week 10. Actors of Russian politics I. (the president, the government, the parliament and political parties, regional politics) 11. Actors of Russian politics II. Russia's security system.

Lectures/discussions, coursework, mid-term test.

Assessment methods

Grading is based on: - Mid-term test: focused on facts from the history and geography of Russia, (max. 20 points) - Coursework either: 1. Essay (7-10 pages): or 2. Situation report (analysis of current topics in the selected sector). Within the coursework, students are expected to combine work with facts, as well as the ability to argue their point of view. (max. 20 points) - Voluntary activity: students can gain extra points by actively participating during classes and thus improve their overall assessment. - final oral exam: (max. 40 points) To pass the course, students must collect at least 80 points (A: 80-75, B: 74-70, C: 69-65, D: 64-60, E: 59-50, F: 49-0).
