Course objectives
At the end of the course the students are able to understand the major issues of political modernization in selected polities of South America and South Asia and to interpret conceptual frameworks usually applied for explaining and evaluating the modernization processes in South American and South (and/or South-East) Asian polities.
Syllabus
  • 1. An Introduction 2. A Comment on Political Research into the Polities of South America and South Asia; Intra-Area and Cross-Area Comparisons 3.-4. Modernization and Dependency Theories 5.-7. Modernization, Regimes and Contentious Politics in South America (Brasil, Chile, Colombia etc.) 8.-10. Modernization, Regimes and Contentious Politics in South and South East Asia (India; Malaysia, Singapore etc.) 11. Discussion.
