Course objectives
The course further develops the knoledge students have gained in the course Systems of political parties I. Different party systems of European and non-European countires will be analysed, with focused on large or specific countries, such as France, Spain, Itali, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Austria, Ireland, USA, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary.
Syllabus
  • 1. Party system and political parties of Great Britan and Ireland: Evolution of British and Irish systems of political parties. 2. Party system and political parties of France: Evolution of the French party system with focus on the development after 1945. 3. Party systems of Benelux and Scandinavia with focus on the Netherlands, Sweden and in the outline also Belgium. Party systems of the Netherlands and Sweden during the 20th Century will be dealt with in more detail. In the case of Belgium, the students will be required to master the ideological and programatical orientation of the more important political parties and changes in the party system. 4. Party system and political parties of Germany, Austria and (in the outline) Switzerland. 5. Party system and political parties of Italy, Spain and Greece. The evolution of the Italian and Spanish party systems will be dealt with in more detail (focus on Italy after 1945, Greece and Spain after 1974, or 1975). 6. Party systems and political parties of Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The general evolution of the post-communist party systems of Central Europe with focus on the situation after 1989. 7. Party system and political parties in the USA. Evolution of the American party system and its characteristics. Differences ot the American and European partisanship.

Assessment methods
The evalutaion is based on a written asignment (term paper) and written exam. The students can gain up to 32 points (term paper 8 points, written exam 24 points), 18 points are required to pass. A. 32 – 30 points B. 29 – 27 points C. 26 – 24 points D. 23 – 21 points E. 20 – 18 points F. 17 points and less
