Course objectives
Students are supposed to learn some principles of projective methods interpretation. The main focus is on Rorschach method (ROR) and Thematic Apperception Test (TAT). The course should contribute to development of the basic skills in projective approach to assessment and is a pre-requisite for postgraduate training in both methods.
Syllabus
  • Block I
  • ROR: Projective methods, projective psychology, projective approach, ROR: original experiments and history of Rorschach assessment, theory of H. Rorschach and later psychoanalytical and perception-cognitive approaches. Variations of Rorschach method: Behn-Rorschach, Zulliger. Etics of projective assessment.
  • Block II
  • TAT: What is the storytelling? Relation between life a story. History of TAT. Variations of TAT: TAT, CAT, SAT, MAPS, TEMAS, AAC. Theory and principles of projection and apperception in TAT, latent and manifest meaning, imagination and real world, distorsion of apperception, comprehensive and structural approaches to TAT, validity and reliability of TAT, TAT in cultural and gender contexts. Overview of some approaches: H. Murray, W.E. Henry, S.Tomkins and E. Tomkins, L. Bellak.
  • Block III
  • ROR: Developmental approach, developmental psychopathology. Intra-test behaviour and extrapolation into extratests situations. ROR validity and reliability. ROR in clinical setting. Scoring systems.
  • Block IV
  • TAT: When we use TAT? Instruction. TAT pictures as stimuli. Sequential analysis of TAT story sequences. Import of story in TAT. Scoring systems: Empathy (H. Teglasi), Interpersonal Decentring (M.Feffer and S.R. Jenkins), Affective scale (A.Thomas). Integrating interpretive procedure (I.I.P.).
  • Block V 
  • ROR: Description of particular ROR tables. Common meanings of the inkblots. Scoring: the basic rules. Location and developmental quality, determinants, contents, special scores. Interpretation of ROR protocol. Practice of administration, observation, recording of verbal and nonverbal client behaviour.
  • Block VI
  • TAT: Examples of TAT protocols interpretation. Training in TAT protocol interpretation
  • Note: Analysis of case fragments are involved into blocks continually.

Teaching methods
lectures, class discussion, homeworks in scoring TAT protocols, class TAT and ROR protocols interpretation
Assessment methods
Lecture and seminar once in two weeks. Students are supposed to write an essay on one ROR and TAT protocol provided by lecturers. They use knowledge gained during the course, and by their independent study. 4 credits. As for interpretation of TAT protocol, students will demonstrate their basic knowledge of one scoring system at least.
