- Course objectives
- Students will get familiarized with the concept, principles, background and usage of the IPA research method. Lectures will be complemented by hands-on approach in the seminars that will focus on the application of the method in all its research phases.
- Learning outcomes
- The course should allow graduates to use IPA in their own project. They should: - Understand the background of IPA in philosophy - Be able to compare IPA with other qualitative approaches - Determine which research projects IPA is and is not suitable for - Be familiar with the limitations of IPA research - Know how to collect and handle data for an IPA research - Apply all IPA steps to the data - Generate research results using IPA
- Syllabus
- Main topics - Context and paradigms of qualitative research. - What is IPA? History. - Phenomenology. Bracketing - epoché; phenomenological reduction. Hermeneutics. - IPA X other qualitative approaches. - How to use IPA: What is it good for? What is it NOT good for? How to form an IPA research question. Research examples. - Good X bad practise. - Validity; weaknesses. - The position of the researcher and respondents in the research. - Data collection methods; transcribing interviews. - What do we do with the data? Analysis steps. - Wrapping up - research results.
