Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the field of general psychopathology (psychiatry) and with an overview with the field of special psychiatry so that students are not only able to identify and describe psychopathological phenomena, but also to define in which mental illnesses individual psychopathological phenomena and conditions occur.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- define individual disorders of psychological functions
- describe basic mental illness using characteristic psychopathological phenomena
- carry out a differential diagnostic assessment based on the description of psychopathology
- describe the present mental state using the terminology of general psychopathology
Syllabus
  • Introduction, basic terms, definition and concept of the field. Basic questions of normality and pathology. An outline of the etiology of mental disorders. Assessment of psychopathology. Diagnostic systems of mental disorders.
  • Overview of the classification of mental disorders (primarily according to ICD-10).
  • Disorders of consciousness, orientation, perception, thinking, speech.
  • Disorders of attention, memory, intelligence, will, action.
  • Disorders of emotions and impulses.
  • Case study exercises, training in differential diagnostic reasoning, training in describing the present mental state (status praesens psychicus).
