Course objectives
Categorical data are the most typical data in social science research. The course introduces modern methods for analyzing categorical data. The emphasis is done on practical applications. Knowledge on linear regression is assumed (OLS regression and ANOVA). This course emphasizing logistic regression models for categorical response variables, and loglinear models for contingency tables. The workshop will be taught by examples. We will work with statistical packages Stata 11 as well as LEM.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction: categorical data in sociology and statistical package LEM 2) Two-way contingency tables in sociology 3) Three-way and more way contingency tables in sociology 4) Analysis of contingency tables and introduction to log-linear models 5) Hierarchical log-linear models 6) Non-hierarchical linear models, topological models and introduction to association models. 7) Log-linear models in LEM and causal log-linear models 8) Association models for two-way and more-way tables 9) Logistic regression pro binary dependent variable 10) Logistic regression for ordinal and multinomial dependent variable 11) Logistic regression and log-linear models 12) Conclusion and exam
