Prerequisite for this course is familiarity with sociological theories and methods appropriate for a graduate of BA level sociology.

Course objectives
The aim of this course is learning the most important theories of sexuality and being able to discuss them critically in historical context. Thanks to case studies from Eastern European countries, students will learn thinking in a comparativist perspective. In the last third of the course, students will formulate their own research topic which they will work into a research paper.
Learning outcomes
Upon passing this course, students will: - know the theorise conceptualising sexuality in the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries - understand case studies on forming sexuality and gender in various countries of the Eastern bloc - compare the development of sexuality and gender in various European countries in the second half of the 20th century - formulate a research question about forming sexuality and gender in a historical perspective, identify suitable data for analysis and write up the findings as a research paper - present their approach and research findings

Sexualty in postwar Germany 7. Changing sexual and gender cultures in Hungary 8. Changing sexual and gender cultures in Plans and Romania 9. Sexology in Czechoslavakia 10. Students present the topics of their research papers(including data and methods 11.-13. Archival work, writing up the research paper, presenting its findings

Preparations from the assigned reading for every class. Formulating a research topic, identifying data and methodology. Writing up research as a final paper. Its oral presentation as part of the final exam.
