Course objectives
The course introduces students to a sociological understanding of the social influences on cultural formations as well as to a sociological understanding of the cultural influences on social processes. Main objectives can be summerized as follows:
to survey the literature in the sociology of culture, with an emphasis on current interpretative approaches to culture
to stimulate ideas and offer conceptual tools for empirical research in cultural sociology

  • Key analytical perspectives on the interdependence of culture and society.
  • Identities and practices as cultural instruments.
  • Institutional fields of cultural production.
  • Categories, knowledge and narratives as cultural frameworks.
  • The event of cultural innovation and the process of social change.
