Cíle předmětu

Given its colonial origins, ethnography, the hallmark of anthropological methodology (along with the discipline itself) has been argued to be impossible and impractical outside of the US, UK, or France. This course, however, explores the ways in which the method of ethnography has been used to explore post-socialist culture and society in Central and Eastern Europe, in both urban and rural contexts. We will also discuss the implication and possibilities of “ethnographies of the state” and “historical ethnographies” in Central and Eastern Europe. Students will be assigned mini-ethnographies as writing tasks.

Metody hodnocení

Note Bene: This course is intended as a seminar, rather than a lecture course. Students’ work consists of intensive reading of required texts and active participation in the class discussions. Students are graded on the basis of their performance in class, the quality of their oral presentation, and the writing of assigned essays.
